Furling systems for sails with stays

Furling systems for stay rider sails / wire forestay

The furling systems for stay rider sails are a speciality from Bartels. These systems allow sails with stays, buttons or zip fasteners to be furled and attached directly to the forestay wire - without any additional profile above the forestay. These systems are particularly light, unobtrusive and ideal for use on classic and high-quality sailing yachts. Existing sails can continue to be used without any problems.

To make the forestay swivelling, a jib furler is installed at the bottom and a swivel at the top of the forestay. In the simplest version, the halyard is guided directly on the forestay - a pulley on the swivel is all that is needed to guide the halyard to the jib furler and tension it there. In a version with halyard lead in the mast, a halyard swivel is also required to decouple the halyard from the swivelling forestay.

The Stagreiter furling systems can be operated with either endless line jib furlers or classic drum jib furlers. They can be installed both on deck and particularly elegantly below deck to discreetly conceal the furling system.

Bartels furling systems for stay rider sails are the standard solution for all classic and high-quality sailing yachts. Standard variants are available for forestay diameters of 3-12 mm.

Reefing systems for sails with leech tape

Furling and reefing systems for sails with a leech tape / moulded forestay

Bartels furling and reefing systems with a profiled forestay are ideal for furling and reefing genoas and jibs. These systems enable both complete furling and partial reduction of the sail area for optimum adaptation to the wind conditions.

The profile forestay consists of an aluminium profile with a keder groove that runs around the forestay wire. The sail is inserted into the groove with its leech tape and fixed in place. Two variants are available for the drive:

  • Endless line jib furlers: These are also suitable for reefing without restrictions and offer numerous advantages, such as:
    • Large diameter pulley for increased power and stability
    • Use of thick, non-slip lines
    • No excess line in the cockpit
    • No risk of knotting within a drum
    • Unlimited downhaul lengths, as the line capacity is not limited.
  • Drum jib furlers: They offer simple line guidance, as only one line needs to be fed into the cockpit.

They can be mounted either on deck or particularly elegantly below deck. When mounted below deck, the turning movement is guided through an angled, watertight deck passage, which further improves the look on classic and high-quality yachts.

With these reefing systems, Bartels offers a versatile and reliable solution for sailors who expect maximum functionality and quality.
